\nOverview
\n\nThe ASAM Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine Workshop is a practical\, case-based workshop designed for providers new to the
field of addiction medicine\, such as primary care physicians\, clinicians
\, and behavioral health specialists\, who see patients at risk for or wit
h addiction. Participants of this workshop will learn more about addiction
medicine and how to screen\, diagnose\, treat\, and/or refer patients wit
h addiction &ndash\; many of whom are already being seen for commonly occu
rring medical and psychiatric comorbidities.
\n
\nThis virtual-l
ive workshop is designed to be energetic and interactive. Attendees will w
ork through session activities and cases presented by faculty in engaging
virtual formats. Sessions throughout the day will include approximately eq
ual parts lecture\, demonstration of skills and skill building.
\n

\n\nProviders and other members of the healthcare team interested in learn
ing more about addiction medicine in the primary care\, emergency/urgent c
are\, treatment centers\, and general psychiatry settings including:\n
\n - Physicians

\nLearning Objectives

's own feelings and attitudes that promote or prevent therapeutic response
s to patients with substance use disorders.

owledge of the diseased brain processes when treating patients with substa
nce use disorders.
\n - Use validated patient screening tools to
detect substance use and interpret a spectrum of results.
\n - Us
e motivational interviewing to enhance patients readiness to change risky
behaviors.
\n - Offer the interventions that are appropriate to s
pecific substances and severity of usage pattern.

hazardous drinking with brief counseling strategies\, appropriate to the
patient's readiness to change.
\n - For patients suspected of hav
ing a SUD\, conduct a biopsychosocial assessment to provide a diagnosis an
d match the patient to an appropriate level of care.

be pharmacotherapy appropriately for alcohol\, tobacco\, and opioid use di
sorders.

l to behavioral interventions including support groups and mutual aid grou
ps that assist in the recovery process.
