Illuminat ion business and technology changes wrought by the introduction of LED's&n bsp\;for lighting will continue to evolve\, even as energy efficiency fade s as a driver for LED lighting adoption.  \;The role of lighting in sm art systems and services will largely depend upon the battle for the socke t (or pole and ceiling) where sensors\, intelligence with local edge compu ting\, communications and access to power reside.  \;As the lighting i ndustry wrestles with relevance in interconnected smart buildings and smar t city systems\, new opportunities for illumination science and engineerin g are continuing to evolve in human wellbeing\, communications\, architect ure and even displays\, and the trajectories of some of these new opportun ities will be reviewed.
