Purpose
Statement \;
\nThroughout the
pandemic\, nurses have promoted health and provided care to persons worldw
ide. In the United States\, significant disparities by race and socioecono
mic status in disease distribution and access to testing\, vaccines\, and
lifesaving treatments have been documented. Globally that inequity is even
more stark\, as high-income countries have been able to access vaccines a
nd move into second and third doses while low- and middle-income countries
struggle to access first doses for their citizens. As a trusted professio
n\, nurses possess unique skillsets that allow for flexibility\, public he
alth engagement\, and care provision in a variety of settings\, which are
vital during a public health crisis. Structural barriers and policies have
prevented the full actualization of nursing&rsquo\;s impact on many front
s. Furthermore\, as nurses have risen to the occasion to provide care in d
iverse settings\, the toll of providing services during this unprecedented
time has impacted the health and wellbeing of the global nursing workforc
e. The need for increased attention to the emotional\, financial\, and phy
sical recovery of the nursing workforce is a matter of great import if hea
lthcare systems are to fully recover. This policy dialogue will focus on s
trategies to ensure more equitable distribution of resources\, increase eq
uity in the US and abroad\, and support nurses as they engage and emerge f
rom this pandemic.
