fires and explosions involving death or serious injury present complex eth
ical and legal issues to the investigator\, subrogation unit and counsel.
Subrogation essentials to be followed and guidance on navigating a loss wi
th a death or injury component will be explored. Topics include investigat
or\, insurer\, and counsel coordination with government officials\; transf
er of scene\; interview timing\; NFPA 921\, Chapter 25\; and coordination
issues involving the insured&rsquo\;s personal counsel.

David Matejczyk\, a partner at RMI\, has participated in hundreds of fire
scene and forensic lab examinations involving fires and explosions during
his career\, many involving deaths and serious injuries to insureds. A mem
ber of the first Board of Directors of NASP\, he served as the chairman fo
r three annual conferences of the organization. David is a graduate of Cas
e Western Reserve University School of Law (JD)\, Gannon University (MPA)
and Alliance College (BS). Dave also has over a decade of service as a pas
t adjunct faculty member at the University of Akron.

\nBrian
J. Churchwell graduated from Ohio Northern University with a Bachelor of S
cience in Electrical Engineering. He is a certified fire investigator (CFI
)\, certified fire and explosion investigator (CFEI) and professional engi
neer (PE) with over 20 years' experience in fire and explosion investigati
on. Brian is the President of Churchwell Fire Consultants\, Inc. With his
knowledge and background in electrical engineering\, Brian applies the ele
ctrical engineering standards and principles to all types of fire losses a
s well as the forensic examination of physical evidence. This includes pro
duct failure analysis\, evaluation of the operation of electrical systems
and products\, the analysis of electrical codes and standards\, and the ac
tions of the utility company&rsquo\;s installation personal\, and equipmen
t users.
