 ent Description</strong></span><span style="font-size: 10pt\; font-family:
  arial\, sans-serif\;"></span></p>\n<p>The theme of the 2019 UPCEA Mid-Atl
antic conference is <strong>Navigating Reinvention</strong>\, inspired by
our host city\, Pittsburgh. Developing from its frontier colonial origins
into an industrial powerhouse in the 20th Century\, the Steel City has res
ponded to the post-industrial economy by transforming itself into a 21st-c
entury hub for innovation. The 446 bridges that surround Pittsburgh\, the
most in any city in the world\, speak to Pittsburgh&rsquo\;s industrial pa
st and its transformative present. And today\, Pittsburgh&rsquo\;s strengt
hs in sectors including technology\, health care\, business\, and educatio
n\, and its success as an incubator for startups\, reflect the city&rsquo\
;s position as a meeting place for the super global and the hyper local. O
ur host institution\, The University of Pittsburgh\, through its strengths
as a research university\, has contributed to the city&rsquo\;s success i
n these areas\, as seen in a myriad of discoveries and accomplishments\, f
rom developing the first polio vaccine in 1955 to creating the first heavi
er-than-air powered aircraft to make a sustained flight. Founded in 1787\,
Pitt has reinvented itself over the centuries to meet the changing needs
of its communities\, thereby playing a central role in the successive rein
ventions of its home city. This resilience and enthusiasm for reinvention
are especially crucial in today&rsquo\;s world\, with its rapidly changing
conditions and evolving challenges in political\, economic\, social\, cul
tural\, and scientific arenas. </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p> In this conference\, we
invite participants to take inspiration from Pittsburgh and to collaborat
e with other conference attendees as we determine how continuing\, profess
ional\, and online education units can navigate 21st-century obstacles by
reinventing our practices and programs. How do we make a compelling case f
or the value of continuing\, professional\, and online education to our ma
ny audiences and constituencies\, and what policies and practices will ens
ure our units&rsquo\; viability in the face of a rapidly changing future?
How can we partner with industry to identify and the meet the needs of a c
urrent and future workforce? How do we scale engagement in our online prog
rams? How can we collect and analyze data to ensure our programs provide r
obust\, effective learning opportunities for our students? And how do we c
onnect and contribute to local and global communities as we develop and de
liver our programs? </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p> The 2019 Mid-Atlantic regional con
ference provides a forum for continuing\, professional\, and online educat
ors in front-line\, mid-level and senior leadership roles to explore these
challenges\, discover new solutions\, and forge strong connections with c
olleagues and peers. The theme <strong>Navigating Reinvention </strong>ref
lects the conference&rsquo\;s focus: identifying our most significant chal
lenges and obstacles\, and connecting with peers to create a roadmap for v
iable solutions. Just as Pittsburgh is bordered by three rivers\, the conf
erence has three tracks: Reinventing yourself through professional develop
ment\; Reinventing your unit by developing innovative operations\; Reinven
ting continuing\, professional and online education through engagement in
 strategic questions. <a href="http://conferences.upcea.edu/mid-atlantic/sc
 hedule.html">See the tentative schedule here.</a></p>\n<p> </p>\n<p> The c
 onference&rsquo\;s location in the <a href="http://conferences.upcea.edu/m
id-atlantic/travel.html">Pittsburgh Marriott City Center</a> provides part
icipants with an excellent location from which to explore the city. There&
rsquo\;s an energy and vitality to the city that perfectly represents the
power of reinvention and transformation. I look forward to seeing you all
in the Steel City\, and being inspired to navigate our own reinvention!</p

019 UPCEA Mid-Atlantic Region Conference agree to allow UPCEA and its offi
cial photographer to photograph them in the context of the conference. Foo
tage captured by the official photographer may be used in future print and
electronic promotional and archival materials. For questions or concerns\
 , please call 202.659.3130 or email&nbsp\;<a href="mailto:info@upcea.edu">
 info@upcea.edu</a>.</p>\n<p><strong>Affiliated Events Policy<em><br />\n</
em></strong>The association has gone to great lengths and expense to negot
iate and contract for a reduced room rate at conference hotels.&nbsp\;That
rate is based upon the projected attendance at the meeting.&nbsp\;If corp
orate member and nonmember attendees elect to stay at other hotels\, it su
bjects the association to attrition penalties that can cause significant f
inancial loss to the association.&nbsp\;We count on our corporate communit
y to support the association\, and one of the ways to do that is to honor
our efforts to secure a sufficiently large room block at a reduced rate at
a first class hotel/conference venue. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>For these re
asons\, corporate member and nonmember attendees are prohibited from holdi
 ng any meetings (briefings\, seminars\, etc.) within a 25-mile radius\, ta
rgeting professional\, continuing\, and online leaders in higher education
during the scheduled hours of UPCEA events unless otherwise negotiated an
d scheduled with and by UPCEA. Any such meeting occurring within 36 hours
before or after the UPCEA conference must be coordinated with UPCEA and\,
space permitting\, be held at the conference hotel.&nbsp\; This policy hel
ps ensure that the association&rsquo\;s contracted obligations to the hote
l for guest rooms and food and beverage minimums are met\, which is essent
ial for the financial health of the association and its members. If UPCEA
cannot find space for the corporate member or nonmember attendee&rsquo\;s
event at the contracted hotel\, we will work to help find alternative spac
e.&nbsp\; In no circumstances\, however\, is it permissible for a corporat
e member or nonmember attendee to contract a separate hotel block\, either
at the conference hotel or elsewhere.&nbsp\; </p>\n<p>UPCEA reserves the
right to prohibit corporate member and nonmember attendees &nbsp\;who viol
ate this policy from exhibiting or participating at UPCEA events.</p>\n<p>
