 ate an aging services community that is informed\, sensitive to\, and supp
 ortive of LGBT elders.</p>\n<p>The course reviews LGBT history and terms\,
  and teaches skills we hope will open the hearts and minds of those caring
  for this often invisible population.</p>\n<p>These skills include:</p>\n<
 ul>\n    <li>Make no assumptions</li>\n    <li>Ask open-ended questions</l
 i>\n    <li>Affirm resident rights</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Studies have shown that
  LGBT elders are four times less likely to have children\, and twice as li
 kely to live alone\, yet are five times less likely to access senior servi
 ces than their heterosexual peers. This lack of support increases the risk
  of depression\, substance abuse\, unnecessary institutionalization and pr
 emature death.</p>
